How errors are reported, assessed and recorded.

Published content will sometimes be wrong. The useful question is what happens next.

Reporting an error

Corrections can be submitted through the contact page using the “scientific correction” category. A report identifying the page, the specific statement and the source that contradicts it can be acted on quickly; a general disagreement takes longer to resolve.

How corrections are handled

  1. A reported error affecting the accuracy of a scientific or regulatory statement is assessed against the cited source.
  2. Where the report is upheld and the statement is materially wrong, the page is corrected and a dated correction note is added to it.
  3. Where a statement cannot be verified while the assessment is in progress, it is withdrawn rather than left published.
  4. Typographical and presentational fixes are made without a correction note.
  5. Where a report is not upheld, the reasoning is given to the person who raised it.

Withdrawal

A profile or article may be withdrawn entirely if its basis no longer holds. Withdrawn pages are removed from the sitemap and from search on this site.
