Mechanism under investigation

Acetic acid is a short-chain carboxylic acid used in dilute aqueous solution to lower pH. In pharmaceutical formulation it functions as a pH-adjusting excipient; applied to a body surface, its acidification is antimicrobial. It has no systemic therapeutic action at the concentrations used as a formulation component, and it is a routine constituent of the diet.
